Canterberry Poker League · Tournament #10

A Husband and Wife Play for It, and Warren Is Champion

Six knockouts and a family finish on the last night, while the man who finished tenth walked away with the trophy.

Friday, April 17, 2009 13 players $260 prize pool 4 paid

The first Canterberry Poker League season ended with the two players at the table married to each other. Tom Buzbee put out six of the twelve who went home, played five hours and seventeen minutes, and came through seven minutes and fifty-one seconds of heads-up play against his wife, Dawn Buzbee. It pays $120, and it is his first win.

Dawn takes $70 for second — the first time she has cashed in this league, and she went the whole way to the last hand of the season to do it.

Dan Myers was third for $45, a second money finish in three, and Joe Johnson completed the money in fourth for $25 with three knockouts in only his second league tournament. He arrives with a Denny Poker Tournament trophy of his own from last May.

The undercard

Duane Barone bubbled in fifth. Mike Conner, who won the very first tournament of this league back in June, closed the season as the first man out after two hours and twelve minutes — and it was Eric Denny, second to him on that opening night, who sent him.

The bigger picture

Ten tournaments, eight different winners, and a champion who spent the final night going out tenth.

Warren Mervin is the first Canterberry Poker League Champion on 98 points. He built it on three wins — nobody else managed more than one — and a card that reached the money five times. He takes the title and the trophy. Chris Johnson finishes second on 82 with six cashes, the most of anybody, and one win — back in July — and Mike Conner is third on 77.

Ten months, twenty-five different players, eight of them winners, and a league that began with six players round one table in June. The Denny Poker Tournament follows in May.
