Eight Deuce · Tournament #15

Paul Coffman Sends Four of the Last Nine Home and Wins His Second

Five tournaments into 2022 and still nobody has won two of them.

Friday, May 13, 2022 14 players $920 prize pool 4 paid

Paul Coffman made five knockouts on Friday and every one of them mattered: he personally eliminated the players who finished second, third, fourth, seventh and ninth. It took four hours and thirty-eight minutes and a sixteen-minute heads-up match, and it paid $365.

It is his second Eight Deuce win and the sixth of his career, coming thirteen months after his first one here. He won the Annual in between, in November, so this is his second trophy in seven months.

David Doole was second for $260, and Lance Cain third for $170 — his third cash here, all three of them since last July, and still no win in either league.

Shawn Miller completed the money in fourth for $125, cashing for the second time in three tournaments since he broke his duck in March.

The undercard

Rick Mazza made three knockouts and bubbled in fifth. Lee Ugarte, who won last month, went ninth — put out by Paul, like most of the people who mattered.

Jeff Holderman finished twelfth. Five tournaments into the season the reigning Player of the Year has yet to cash in any of them; last year he cashed in six of nine.

Angela Cain was the first player out after eighty minutes.

The bigger picture

Five tournaments, five different winners — exactly the pattern of last season, which ran to eight winners in ten. Nobody has won twice in 2022.

Lee Ugarte still leads on 234.34 despite a quiet night, with Paul Coffman up to second on 194.83 and Shawn Miller third. Fourteen entries and two rebuys made $920, the smallest pool of the year so far and still bigger than five of last season’s ten.
