Brian Albers Wins for the First Time in Three Years

Four winners from four tournaments, and Lori Mazza finished third for the third time.

The last time Brian Albers won a Canterberry Poker League tournament was November 2010. On Friday he made four knockouts, played three hours and twenty-six minutes, and won his second for $140 — thirty-four months after the first.

He beat Erik Treiber heads-up in just under eight minutes. Erik matched him with four knockouts of his own and took $75 for second, which is where he finished last month as well.

Lori Mazza was third for $40. It is the third time in four tournaments she has finished exactly third, and after seventeen league tournaments she is still looking for a first win. Mike Conner took fourth and $25, and Kenny Jones completed the money in fifth for $20.

Dawn Bjork bubbled in sixth a month after winning. Seventh was shared between Steve McLean and Warren Mervin, both put out by the eventual winner. Eric Denny was gone inside forty-six minutes, the earliest anyone has left a table this season.

Rick Mazza came twelfth, which ends a run of three straight money finishes to start the season.

The bigger picture

Four tournaments, four different winners, and nobody has won twice. Rick Mazza and Lori Mazza are the only players to have cashed three times, and between them they have five second-or-third places and one win.

Rick Mazza still leads on 54 points, but the gap is closing: Lori Mazza is seven back on 47 and Dawn Bjork another point behind on 46. Two of the top three are women, and the third is married to one of them.
