The first title this group ever awarded went to Warren Mervin — the Canterberry League Championship of 2008-09. Sixteen years later he took the Eight Deuce Player of the Year, and the year after that the Tournament of Champions. Three trophies, one from each era of this league.

2024 is the season to look at. Coming into that March, Warren had played thirty Eight Deuce tournaments across three years without winning one of them. Two runner-up finishes, six more top-four finishes, and somewhere in the middle a stretch of fifteen straight tournaments without so much as a cash. That is a long time to keep showing up.

March 8th, 2024, sixteen runners, the thirty-first attempt: he won it. In October he won the finale as well, and took the Player of the Year title by seventy-two points.

He has 17 wins across all events he has entered and $8,952 in career prize money. But the figure that actually describes him is 64 cashes, 55 of them on the regular-season through-line — more than any player in the history of the league. Not the most wins. The most times walking out of that room with money in his pocket.

Twenty-six trips to heads-up, fifteen of them won. He has won tournaments under both league names, eighteen years apart. And in August 2026, at #58, eighteen runners, he did it again for $480 in prize money. Eighteen years in, and Warren is still taking tournaments down.
