Warren Mervin Draws Level at the Top

Eric Denny held the all-time lead on his own for exactly one tournament.

A month ago Eric Denny won his seventh Canterberry Poker League tournament and had the all-time lead to himself. On Friday Warren Mervin won his seventh and took half of it back — six knockouts out of twelve, three hours and thirty-eight minutes, $125, and his first win in nineteen months.

Eric was in the room for it and finished third for $40. He was one of the six Warren put out.

Steve McLean was second for $65 without making a knockout all night, and lost the heads-up match in three minutes and twenty-three seconds. Rick Mazza took fourth and $25. The payouts ran one place deeper than the bubble and the last $5 went to Brian Albers in sixth — a man who had won two of his three previous league starts.

Doug Klich came fifth, one place short of the money in a night where the money ran past him anyway. Dawn Bjork finished twelfth and lost the league lead with it. Kelly Kruegel was the first player out after fifty-one minutes, in her second appearance of the season.

The bigger picture

Nine tournaments, eight different winners, and one tournament left.

Rick Mazza is back in front on 88 points, eight clear of Dawn Bjork. Both have played all nine, so both are already discarding a score under the best-eight rule — which means the finale can only help them if they beat their own worst night. Erik Treiber is third on 71 and has not played since January.
