Warren Mervin Draws Level Again, This Time at Eleven

He took out the three men who finished behind him in the money, and the finish itself lasted 138 seconds.

Three months after Eric Denny took the all-time lead alone, Warren Mervin has caught him. Four knockouts, four hours and thirty-three minutes, $130 — an eleventh Canterberry Poker League win, and a fourth time in three years that these two have arrived level. Josh Reel, who has shared the top with them three times before, stays on ten.

Three of Warren’s four knockouts were the players who finished in the money behind him, and the last of them took two minutes and eighteen seconds of heads-up play.

Jeff Ferguson lost that one and took $90 for second, the best finish of a fourteen-tournament career and only his second cash. Paul Coffman was third for $65 with three knockouts, and Eric completed the money in fourth for $35 without making one.

Jeff Reichwein bubbled in fifth. Lee Ugarte finished ninth with three knockouts, more than anyone outside the top three, and Brig Coupe was the first player out after an hour and forty-nine minutes.

Mike McEvoy, who won last month for the first time in eight and a half years, came eleventh.

The bigger picture

Four tournaments, four different winners, and no two of them alike: a man with eleven wins, a man in his second tournament, a man in his thirty-fifth waiting on his first, and now a man with eleven again.

Eric Denny leads on 63 points from four starts, five ahead of Charlie Drotar, who has cashed in three of four and won none. Warren is fifth on 48 having banked his win late.
