Dawn Wins Her Second, and a Debutant Takes Third

Five months after becoming the first woman to win one of these, she does it again — in a field with three women in it, two of whom finished in the money.

Dawn Buzbee made three knockouts, played four hours and eleven minutes and took $125 — her second Canterberry Poker League win, five months after the first.

In February she became the first woman to win one of these in eighteen attempts. She has now won two of the last five.

Kjell Wygant was second for $70 and did the most damage in the room: five knockouts, nearly half the field, including the last man out. That is now three cashes from four league tournaments and a second straight runner-up finish, and he still has not won one.

Ashley Lee played her first league tournament and finished third for $40, which is a considerable way to introduce yourself — her father Lee Ugarte was still in the room at the time, and went out fifth. Tom Buzbee completed the money in fourth for $25.

Lee Ugarte bubbled in fifth with a knockout. Kelly Kruegel was ninth on her first league night, and Bill Mell eleventh on his. Rick Mazza went out first after two hours and eleven minutes, the fifth player Kjell sent home.

The bigger picture

Two tournaments, two different winners, and Kjell leads on 41 points from two runner-up finishes — fifteen clear of Warren Mervin, and he has never won a tournament in this league.

The other number from this one: thirteen players, three of them women, and two of those three finished in the money. Five months ago no woman had ever won one of these at all.
