Canterberry Poker League · Tournament #24

Kjell Leads the League and Finally Wins One

Two runner-up finishes and a season-long lead, and none of it was a victory until now.

Friday, September 10, 2010 13 players $260 prize pool 4 paid

Kjell Wygant has led these standings since July without ever winning a tournament. On Friday he fixed it: six knockouts, half the field, four hours and forty-five minutes at the table and an eighteen-and-a-half-minute heads-up match. It pays $130, and it is his first Canterberry Poker League win at the sixth attempt.

His card now reads second, second, sixth, first — four cashes from six tournaments, and no finish worse than sixth all season.

Dan Myers was second for $70 with three knockouts, a second money finish in a row after fourth last month. Mandy Denny took third and $40, her second cash of the season. And Kelly Kruegel completed the money in fourth for $20 in only her third league tournament.

The undercard

Rick Mickaliger bubbled in fifth. Tom Buzbee was the first man out for the second month running, this time after two hours and nine minutes — and Kjell sent home the last three players to leave, Tom among them.

The bigger picture

Four tournaments, four different winners, and the man who leads has finally earned it. Kjell is on 74 points, thirty-four clear of Warren Mervin — the biggest lead anybody has held at any point in three seasons of this league.

Six nights left, and the chasing pack is bunched: Warren, Lee Ugarte, Rick Mazza, Mandy and Dan are covered by ten points.
