Rick Mickaliger Gets There at the Tenth Attempt
A fourth season opens with a first win, a debutant on the podium, and a runner-up who took out half the field.
Rick Mickaliger has been turning up since January 2010 and had finished second, fourth and fifth without ever taking one. On Friday he did — three knockouts, three hours and forty-three minutes, and $98 in his tenth league tournament.
The man he beat had done most of the damage. David Doole put out five of the ten who went home — half the field — and took $56 for second. It is his best finish in thirteen league tournaments.
Steve McLean played his first Canterberry Poker League tournament and finished third for $35, which is a tidy way to arrive. Mike Conner completed the money in fourth for $21.

The undercard
Charlie Drotar bubbled in fifth with a knockout. Dawn Buzbee was the first player out after an hour and forty-four minutes — one of the five Doole sent home on a night when nobody else managed more than three.
The bigger picture
One down, nine to go. Doole leads on 20 points despite not winning it, which is what five knockouts and a runner-up finish will do on opening night.
The league starts its fourth season with a smaller field than it finished the third — eleven, against the twenty who turned out in January — and a new name in the room.
