Canterberry Poker League · Tournament #47

Josh Reel Makes It Seven for Seven

Seven tournaments into the season, nobody has won twice. The league has been here exactly once before.

Friday, January 11, 2013 13 players $260 prize pool 5 paid

Nine months after his last one, Josh Reel won his fourth Canterberry Poker League tournament — four hours and twenty-two minutes, four knockouts, and $120 out of a thirteen-handed field.

Nobody busted for the first two and a half hours. When it finally broke, Josh did most of the breaking: he put out the three players who finished directly behind him, and one more besides.

Tom Buzbee was second for $60, his third cash of the season. He and Josh went to heads-up play and it lasted two minutes and thirty-three seconds.

David Doole took third and $35. Erik Treiber was fourth for $25, only the second time he has cashed in twelve tournaments. Scott Dishong completed the money in fifth for $20 with three knockouts, the most of anyone who did not reach the final two.

The undercard

Tyrone Varga bubbled in sixth with a knockout. Lee Ugarte was the first player out, after two hours and thirty-four minutes — put there by Skippy, who then took out Mike McEvoy and Charlie Drotar as well.

Lori Mazza finished twelfth, sent home by her husband Rick Mazza, who lasted one place longer than she did.

The bigger picture

Seven tournaments, seven different winners. The only other time this league has opened a season that deep without a repeat was last year, when it also reached seven before Rick Mickaliger won his second in #38.

David Doole holds the top of the table on 68 points from seven starts. Josh is four back having played six, and Steve McLean is on 62 from five — two fewer tournaments than the leader, with three left to play.
