Canterberry Poker League · Tournament #52

Kenny Jones Wins on Debut

Eight knockouts, which equals the league record, and then the longest heads-up match this league has ever played.

Friday, July 12, 2013 13 players $260 prize pool 4 paid

Kenny Jones had never played a Canterberry Poker League tournament before Friday. He knocked out eight of the thirteen players in it, equalling the most anybody has managed on one night, and won it for $130.

Five men have now won the first league tournament they ever entered. Two of them have done it in the last thirteen months — Scott Dishong last June, and now Kenny.

The finish took a while. Rick Mazza arrived at heads-up looking for back-to-back wins after taking the season opener, and the two of them played for thirty-eight minutes and fifty-three seconds — longer than any heads-up match in the league’s five years, beating the thirty-seven minutes of January 2011. Rick Mazza took $65 for second.

Lori Mazza was third for $40 with three knockouts, her second third-place finish in a row and the second cash of her career. David Doole completed the money in fourth for $25.

The undercard

Dawn Bjork bubbled in fifth. Eleventh was shared by Duane Barone and Steve Drown, who went out on the same hand. Scott Dishong was the first player out after an hour and forty-four minutes — the start of Kenny’s eight.

The bigger picture

Two tournaments, two winners, and the second of them has played the league exactly once.

Rick Mazza leads on 32 points from a win and a second, nine clear of Lori Mazza, who has two thirds and is the only other player to cash twice. Kenny sits third on 21 from his single appearance.
