David Doole Ends an Eighteen-Month Wait

Five knockouts, three of them the men who finished behind him in the money.

Eighteen months after his last one, David Doole won his third Canterberry Poker League tournament — three hours and fifty-nine minutes, five knockouts, and $150 out of a seventeen-man field.

Three of those five were the players who finished second, third and fourth. He closed it out against Rick Mazza in four minutes and thirteen seconds, a short finish by the standards of a season that has produced three of the four longest heads-up matches in league history.

Rick Mazza took $85 for second with four knockouts of his own, his fourth cash of the season. Lee Ugarte was third for $50 and Erik Treiber fourth for $30 — Erik’s fourth money finish in five appearances. Scott Dishong completed the money in fifth for $25 with three knockouts.

Doug Klich bubbled in sixth in only his second league tournament. Paul Coffman and Mike Chavez both played their first, finishing twelfth and seventeenth; Mike Chavez was the first man out, after an hour and thirty-three minutes. Thirteenth was shared by Matt Moriarty and Dawn Bjork, who went out on the same hand — a bad night for the league leader.

The bigger picture

Seven tournaments, six different winners. Brian Albers is still the only man to have won twice, and he has not played since.

Rick Mazza takes the lead back on 77 points, five ahead of Dawn. Erik Treiber is third on 71 from five appearances — two fewer than either of the men above him, and he has cashed in four of them.
