Eight Knockouts and Thirty-Seven Minutes Heads-Up
Lee Ugarte broke two league records on the same night, and needed every bit of the second one to finish the job.
Nineteen players had to go out, and Lee Ugarte handled eight of them — more than anybody has managed in a Canterberry Poker League tournament. Then he could not close it. The heads-up match ran thirty-seven minutes and twenty-three seconds, eleven minutes longer than any this league has seen, before it went his way. It pays $170.
It is his second league win, nineteen months after the first, and it comes in a twenty-man field — equal to the biggest the league has assembled.
The man who made him work for it was Eric Denny, second for $100 with three knockouts, back in the final two for the second time this season. Brian Schrameyer took third and $60, Warren Mervin fourth and $40, and Dan Myers completed the money in fifth for $30.

The undercard
Mandy Denny bubbled in sixth. Rick Mazza finished ninth with two knockouts and Bill Mell eighth with one, but the story below the money is how many of them the winner accounted for: of the fifteen players who finished sixth or lower, five were sent home by Lee. Tom Buzbee was the first out after an hour and thirteen minutes.
The bigger picture
Seven tournaments, six different winners, and the leader has finally been caught in the standings — nearly. Kjell Wygant is on 106 points after a nineteenth place, and Lee Ugarte’s night has taken him to 95, with Warren at 91.
Three nights left, and what looked like a procession in October is now three players inside fifteen points.
