Canterberry Poker League · Tournament #56

Two Starts, Two Wins for Brian Albers

He has played this season twice and won both. Meanwhile Mandy Denny knocked out five and Dawn Bjork took the lead.

Eighteen players — the biggest field of the season — and Brian Albers won it in four and a half hours for $160. He has entered two Canterberry Poker League tournaments this season and won them both.

Before September he had one league win in ten attempts, from November 2010. He now has three in twelve. He got there by knocking out the three players who finished immediately behind him, then playing Josh Reel heads-up for thirty-eight minutes and twenty-seven seconds — the second-longest heads-up match this league has played, behind only the thirty-nine minutes of July. Three of the four longest have come this season.

Josh took $90 for second, a month after winning. Erik Treiber was third for $50, his third cash in four appearances. Mandy Denny finished fourth for $35 having knocked out five players, more than anyone in the room — and in thirty-eight league tournaments she has still never won one. Dawn Bjork completed the money in fifth for $25.

The undercard

Scott Dishong bubbled in sixth. Doug Klich played his first league tournament and came thirteenth, and Chris Huey came fifteenth in his first since August 2008 — five years and fifty-two tournaments between appearances.

Rick Mazza went out first after fifty minutes, knocked out by Dawn, and it cost him the lead he had held all season.

The bigger picture

Six tournaments, five different winners. Brian is the first man to win twice this season, and he has done it from two starts while the players chasing him have played six.

Dawn Bjork now leads on 67 points, one ahead of Lori Mazza and ten ahead of Rick Mazza, who started the night in front. The top two are women: Dawn last won in August, and Lori Mazza has never won at all.
