Josh Reel Breaks the Tie He Made in April
Two months ago his seventh win put three men level at the top. His eighth leaves him there alone.
In April Josh Reel won the season finale and became the third man to reach seven Canterberry Poker League wins. On Friday he opened the new season by winning again — three hours and fifty-five minutes, five knockouts, $85 — and now he has eight, one more than Eric Denny or Warren Mervin.
He and Brian Albers made nine of the eleven knockouts between them and then played heads-up for eight minutes and forty-nine seconds. Brian took $55 for second, having put out four players including the two who tied for eighth.
Kelly Kruegel was third for $25, her ninth cash in twenty-two league tournaments and still without a win in any of them. Charlie Drotar completed the money in fourth for $15.

The undercard
Steve McLean bubbled in fifth. Dave Grewe played his first league tournament and shared eighth with Eric Denny, the pair of them going out on the same hand. Lee Ugarte was the first player out after an hour and twenty-two minutes, six weeks after winning the Annual.
The bigger picture
The prize pool is built differently this season. Twelve players at $25 produced $180 rather than the $240 the same field would have made last year — $15 a head into the pool instead of $20.
The scoring has changed too, and by a lot: Josh took 50 points for the win where a win last season was worth somewhere between fourteen and twenty-two. Comparing this season’s totals to any other one will not tell you anything.
