Canterberry Poker League · Tournament #82
Eric Denny Joins Josh Reel on Ten
Half the field went out to him. Warren Mervin reached the last two without a knockout to his name.
Ten players had to be eliminated and Eric Denny eliminated five of them, including the three who finished behind him in the money. It took three hours and fifty-nine minutes, paid $70, and made him the second man to win ten Canterberry Poker League tournaments.
Josh Reel got there in October and has stayed there since. Eric has now drawn level, and Warren Mervin — who was in the room and finished second — sits a win behind them on nine.
Warren took $50 for a runner-up finish in which he did not knock anybody out, and lost the heads-up match in six minutes. It is the second tournament running that the man finishing second has made no knockouts at all.
Lance Cain was third for $25, the first cash of a nine-tournament career, and Duane Barone completed the money in fourth for $20 with two knockouts.
Where the money went
| Player | Prize | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Eric Denny | $70 |
| 2 | Warren Mervin | $50 |
| 3 | Lance Cain | $25 |
| 4 | Duane Barone | $20 |
The undercard
Andrew Shier bubbled in fifth. Greg Howell finished seventh with two knockouts — both of the men who came tenth and eleventh, including Jeff Schliem, the first player out after an hour and thirty minutes.
Paul Coffman, who won the league in April, came tenth of eleven. That is a sixth and a tenth from his two appearances this season.
The bigger picture
Two tournaments, two different winners, and both were won by men who had won here before.
Eric Denny leads on 37 points from two starts, eleven ahead of Steve McLean, who has played one. It is early enough that the five-score cap has not begun to matter, but on last season’s evidence it will: the 2015-16 title went to a player who entered eight tournaments and counted only five of them.
