Rick Mazza Wins After Fifty-Three Months

The longest wait between two wins this league has recorded, and it beats a record set less than two years ago.

Rick Mazza last won a Canterberry Poker League tournament in June 2013. On Friday he knocked out seven of the seventeen players who had to go and won his sixth — four hours and five minutes, $125, and a gap of fifty-three months.

Nobody has waited longer. Rick Mickaliger set the mark at forty-seven months in January last year, and that has now gone; Duane Barone’s forty-four and Lee Ugarte’s forty-three sit behind it.

David Doole was second for $85, losing an eight-minute heads-up match. Charlie Drotar took third and $50, a fourth cash in five appearances this season, and it puts him back on top of the standings.

Lee Ugarte was fourth for $45 with three knockouts and Steve McLean completed the money in fifth for $35 with two.

Brig Coupe bubbled in sixth. Dawn Bjork came seventh in her first league tournament of the season, and Paul Coffman was the first player out after forty minutes — knocked out by Eric Denny, who then went twelfth himself.

The bigger picture

Six tournaments, six different winners. Nobody has won twice, and the six between them hold thirty-three league wins.

Charlie Drotar leads on 79 points from five starts, nine ahead of Eric Denny. He has cashed four times this season without winning one; his own last win was in April 2013, two months before the one Rick Mazza just ended.
