Rick Mazza Wins a Second, and Jeff Holderman Runs Out of Room Again

Thirty-seven minutes heads-up, the longest finish the league has had — and the first repeat winner.

Rick Mazza won the first tournament this league ever held. On Friday he won the sixth, beating Jeff Holderman in a thirty-seven-minute heads-up match — the longest of the six — for $420. He is the first player to win two here.

Holderman is now the man who cannot quite finish. He has played five Eight Deuce tournaments and been in the top three in all five: first, second, second, third, and second again for $250. His only win is still February’s.

Shawn Miller made five knockouts, more than anyone, and came third for $175. Six tournaments in, he has a second, a third and a fourth, and no win in either league.

Angela Cain was fourth for $135 — her first cash in the new league, after finishing sixth or seventh in each of the previous four.

Justin Vaughn bubbled in fifth. Paul Coffman, who won in April, was the first player out this time after two hours — and Josh Reel, who won in May, went ninth. Lance Cain finished eleventh, seven places behind his wife.

The bigger picture

Thirteen players and four rebuys made $980, the second-biggest pool the league has put up. The rebuys are becoming a habit — there have been eleven across the six tournaments, and Canterberry never allowed one.

Jeff Holderman leads the Player of the Year race on 266.84 from five starts, more than fifty clear of Josh Reel. One win and four other top-three finishes have done it; the format counts a player’s best eight, and there are four tournaments left.
