Steve Drown Knocks Out Eleven
He had four knockouts in his entire career and had never cashed. Then he took out more than half a twenty-man field.
Steve Drown first played this league in January 2009. In the thirteen tournaments that followed he never finished better than seventh, never took a cent, and knocked out four players in six years. On Friday he knocked out eleven and won the thing.
Eleven is a Canterberry Poker League record and it is not close. Three players had made eight on a night — Lee Ugarte, Ashley Lee and Kenny Jones — and in sixty-seven tournaments nobody had gone past it. Nineteen players had to be eliminated on Friday and Steve accounted for eleven of them.
The last one took a while. He and Paul Coffman played heads-up for thirty-three minutes, the fifth-longest finish in league history, and Steve won $115. Paul took $70 for second, which was the first cash of his nine-tournament career.
Rick Mickaliger was third for $50. Dave Grewe took fourth and $30, also a first career cash, in his fifth tournament. Erik Treiber was fifth for $20 and Chris Huey completed the money in sixth for $15 — three of the six paid places went to men who had never been paid before.

The undercard
Twenty players is the biggest field this league has ever had, matching July 2012. Dawn Bjork was the first of them out, after fifty-three minutes — the first of Steve’s eleven. Andrew Shier played his first league tournament and came fourteenth.
Rick Mazza finished seventh, Josh Reel seventeenth and Scott Dishong eighteenth. Between them those three have sixteen league wins.
The bigger picture
Seven tournaments, six different winners. Only Skippy has won twice.
He also still leads, on 141 points from four starts, two ahead of Josh Reel, who has played six. The night barely moved the top of the table. The man who rewrote the record book beat the league leader by seventeen places on the night and is still outside the top ten for the season.
