Josh Reel Draws Level Again

Nine wins apiece for him and Warren Mervin. Three new players sat down, and Steve McLean finished second for the second month running.

Thirteen months after his last one, Josh Reel won his ninth Canterberry Poker League tournament — four knockouts, four and a half hours, $75 — and drew level with Warren Mervin at the top of the all-time list once again.

Steve McLean was second for $45, which is exactly where he finished in June. Two tournaments into the season he has two runner-up finishes and the lead in the standings, and he has not won a league tournament since November 2012.

The four-and-a-half-minute heads-up match was the shortest part of a long night. Erik Treiber was third for $35 with three knockouts, Eric Denny fourth for $30 and Mandy Denny fifth for $20, a husband and wife filling the last two paid places.

Three players sat down here for the first time. Mike McLean came tenth and knocked out one man; Greg Howell was eleventh; Jeff Schliem was fifteenth and first out, after an hour and two minutes — put there by Mike McLean, whose brother Steve McLean was still in it and on his way to a second straight runner-up.

Paul Coffman, who won the opener with nine knockouts, came fourteenth of fifteen with none.

The bigger picture

Two tournaments, two different winners. Steve McLean leads on 41 points from his pair of seconds, eight ahead of Josh.

With only the best five scores counting this season, two good nights already go most of the way to filling a card — and Mac has used two of his five on results he could hardly improve without winning.
