Rick Mickaliger Ends the Longest Wait This League Has Had

Forty-seven months between wins. Andrew Shier finished second again, which is the only thing he has ever done here.

Rick Mickaliger last won a Canterberry Poker League tournament in February 2012. On Friday he won his third by knocking out six of the fourteen players who had to go — four hours and ten minutes, $90, and a gap of forty-seven months between wins.

That is the longest anybody has waited. Duane Barone went forty-four months between his two, and Steve McLean thirty-six between his; Rick Mickaliger has beaten both.

Andrew Shier was second for $60 with three knockouts, losing a thirteen-minute heads-up match. He has now played eleven league tournaments and cashed twice, and both of those were runner-up finishes.

Eric Denny took third and $30 without a knockout, and Rick Mazza completed the money in fourth for $25, also without one.

David Doole bubbled in fifth. Greg Howell, who won in September in his second appearance, was the first player out, though it took two hours to get him there.

Lee Ugarte made two knockouts and finished ninth; the winner put him out.

The bigger picture

Seven tournaments, six different winners. Only Josh Reel has won twice.

Steve McLean takes the lead back on 101 points, three ahead of Josh and eleven ahead of Paul Coffman. Three tournaments remain, everyone at the top has filled a five-score card, and Andrew Shier sits fourth on 80 without having won anything.
