Charlie Drotar Wins After Sixty-Three Months

He has led the standings, cashed twenty-nine times and finished second and third more often than anyone would want to count. His last win was April 2013.

In the sixty-three months since Charlie Drotar last won a Canterberry Poker League tournament he has played thirty-one more league tournaments, cashed in fifteen of them and led the season standings through most of last winter. On Friday he knocked out five of the fifteen and won his third — three hours and fifty minutes, $120.

Only Mike Conner has waited longer between two wins, and his gap was the ten years between tournament #1 and tournament #100 three months ago. Charlie’s sixty-three months pushes Rick Mazza’s fifty-three into third.

Andrew Shier was second for $85 after a seventeen-minute heads-up match — two tournaments into his title defense, two cashes.

Juan Lopez took third and $55 and Jason Dailey fourth and $40, both in the second league tournament they have played and both first cashes.

Warren Mervin bubbled in fifth. Eric Denny finished sixth with three knockouts, more than anyone outside the top two. Brig Coupe was the first player out after an hour and one minute.

Dale Ellicott, who won on debut a month ago, came fourteenth in his second.

The bigger picture

Two tournaments, two different winners: a man in his first league tournament and a man in his sixty-fifth.

Andrew Shier leads on 42 points from a fourth and a second, three ahead of Warren Mervin. The champion has started his defense by cashing twice without winning — which is roughly how he won it, having taken the title last season with four cashes in ten.
