Lee Ugarte had not won a Canterberry Poker League tournament since September 2012. He closed the 2015-16 season by winning his sixth — five knockouts, four hours and twenty-five minutes, $75, and a thirty-nine-minute heads-up match to finish it.

That is the third-longest finish this league has played, and the second-longest of this season alone: Paul Coffman and Steve McLean went forty-three seconds longer in the opener back in June.

Mike McEvoy lost it and took $55 for second — his second runner-up finish in a row, four weeks after the first. He has played twenty-nine league tournaments and won none of them.

David Doole was third for $40 and Rick Mazza fourth for $30, with four knockouts apiece; between them and the winner, thirteen of the fifteen eliminations were accounted for. Charlie Drotar completed the money in fifth for $20.

The undercard

Eric Denny bubbled in sixth. Josh Reel needed a big night to take the league and was the first player out instead, after an hour and thirty-eight minutes, knocked out by Doole. Paul Coffman came twelfth, which turned out not to matter.

The bigger picture

Ten tournaments, eight different winners. Josh and Paul won two each and nobody won three.

Paul Coffman is the 2015-16 League Champion and takes the trophy on 109 points from eight starts — two fewer than the two men behind him. With only the best five scores counting, the two wins he took in June and March did most of the work.

He is the seventh different champion in the eight seasons this league has run, and until this season he had never won a league tournament at all. Josh Reel was second on 107 and Steve McLean third on 101, both from all ten.
