Mike McEvoy Wins One at Last

Thirty-five tournaments, eight and a half years, four second places and four thirds. Now a first.

Mike McEvoy first played this league in January 2009. In the thirty-four tournaments that followed he finished second four times and third four times and never once won. On Friday he knocked out five of the eighteen and did — four hours and thirty-five minutes, $130.

Three of those four runner-up finishes came in a row across the spring of last year, in March, April and June. The other was in August 2009, eight years ago almost to the week.

Josh Reel was second for $85, losing the heads-up match in under eight minutes. Erik Treiber took third and $55 without making a knockout, and Brig Coupe was fourth for $45.

Andrew Shier finished fifth for $40. The payouts then ran past two unpaid places and stopped at Charlie Drotar, who took $5 for seventh.

Greg Howell came sixth, the one place in the top seven that paid nothing. Jeff Reichwein, who won last month in his second tournament, came fourteenth in his third.

Jeff Ferguson was the first player out after an hour and forty-two minutes, one of two knockouts for Duane Barone.

The bigger picture

Three tournaments, three different winners, and the third had been trying for eight and a half years.

Charlie Drotar still leads, on 53 points, having cashed in all three so far without winning any — a third, a second and a seventh. His last league win was in April 2013, fifty-two months ago.
