Andrew Shier Wins His First, and Takes the Lead With It

Thirty tournaments and three runner-up finishes. Nine tournaments this season, nine different winners.

Andrew Shier had finished second three times in thirty Canterberry Poker League tournaments — in August 2015, in January 2016 and in January this year — and had never won one. On Friday he knocked out six of the nineteen and did, taking $140 in four hours flat, and the lead in the standings with one tournament to play.

It is the second time this season a long wait has ended: Mike McEvoy won his first in August, in his thirty-fifth tournament, and now this.

David Doole was second for $95 with four knockouts, losing a fourteen-minute heads-up match. Warren Mervin took third and $60 with three.

Scott Dishong was fourth for $50 without a knockout, in only his second appearance of the season, and Josh Martin completed the money in fifth for $35.

Paul Coffman bubbled in sixth. Lee Ugarte, who a month ago knocked out seven of fourteen and won, was the first player out after twenty-six minutes and eight seconds — the third-quickest exit this league has seen, behind two of Duane Barone’s.

Duane finished ninth with three knockouts, as many as anyone outside the top two.

The bigger picture

Nine tournaments, nine different winners. The record this season broke last month was seven; it now stands at nine, and one tournament remains.

Andrew Shier leads on 99 points from nine starts, four ahead of David Doole, who has played seven. Charlie Drotar is third on 87 and has led this table for most of the season without winning a tournament in five years.
