Nine years and ten months between them. Twenty-five players, ten tournaments, ten different winners — none of it has happened before.
On 21 June 2008, six players sat down for the first Canterberry Poker League tournament and Mike Conner won it. He did not win another one for one hundred and eighteen months. On Friday, in the hundredth, he did — twenty-five players, five hours and seven minutes, $175.
The gap more than doubles the previous record. Rick Mazza waited fifty-three months between wins in November, which had beaten Rick Mickaliger’s forty-seven; Mike Conner has waited nearly ten years.
He knocked out six players, and they were the six who finished behind him in the money — second through seventh, every one of them. Jeff Schliem was the last, losing a twelve-minute heads-up match and taking $110, the first cash of his eight-tournament career.
Greg Howell was third for $70, Steve McLean fourth for $50, Rick Mickaliger fifth for $40 and Joe Johnson sixth for $30. Paul Coffman completed the money in seventh for $5.

The undercard
Twenty-five players is the largest field this league has ever seated, past the twenty-two of March last year. Steve Drown was the first out after an hour and fifteen minutes, and Dawn Bjork finished ninth with a knockout — she put out Andrew Shier, who arrived leading the standings.
David Doole, second in the table coming in, came twenty-fourth of twenty-five.
The bigger picture
Ten tournaments, ten different winners. No season in this league’s history had produced more than nine, and none had ever gone a whole year without somebody winning twice. This one did.
Andrew Shier is the 2017-18 League Champion and takes the trophy on 103 points from all ten tournaments — a season in which he cashed four times — a fifth, a third, a second and the win — and finished outside the money in the other six. He is the eighth different champion in ten seasons.
David Doole was second on 95 from eight and Paul Coffman third on 90.
