Rick Mazza’s Seventh, and Andrew Shier Cashes Again
Three tournaments into his title defense the champion has a fourth, a second and a third. Lance Cain has his best finish in twenty-seven attempts.
Rick Mazza knocked out six of the eighteen players who had to go and won his seventh Canterberry Poker League tournament — four hours and eighteen minutes, $135, nine months after his sixth.
Lance Cain was second for $75 with three knockouts, losing the heads-up match in under five minutes. It is the best finish of a twenty-seven-tournament career and his fourth cash.
Andrew Shier took third and $55. The reigning League Champion has now played three tournaments this season and cashed in all three, and it puts him fifteen points clear at the top.
Dawn Bjork was fourth for $40 in her second appearance of the season, and Greg Howell fifth for $30 with three knockouts. The money then ran past two unpaid places and stopped at Lee Ugarte, who took $5 for eighth.

The undercard
Juan Lopez came sixth, on a hand that Dawn Bjork and Greg Howell shared. David Doole was the first player out after fifty-five minutes, knocked out by Eric Denny, who then went thirteenth himself.
Dale Ellicott, who won the season opener on debut, came fourteenth.
The bigger picture
Three tournaments, three different winners — a debutant, a man ending a sixty-three-month wait, and a man on his seventh.
Andrew Shier leads on 64 points from three starts, fifteen ahead of Warren Mervin. He won last season’s title with four cashes in ten tournaments; he has three in three already.
