Dale Ellicott Wins Again, in His Fourth Tournament

He won the first one he ever played. Four months later he has two wins from four starts, and this season finally has a repeat winner.

In June Dale Ellicott won the first Canterberry Poker League tournament he entered. On Friday he won his fourth — four knockouts, four hours and forty minutes, $140 — and he has now taken two of the four he has played.

He is also this season’s first repeat winner. Last season went ten tournaments without one, which had never happened before; the last season to produce a two-time winner was 2016-17, when Paul Coffman and David Doole both managed it.

Jeff Ferguson was second for $80 after a five-and-a-half-minute heads-up match — his second runner-up finish in twenty-two league tournaments, and he has yet to win one.

Rick Mazza took third and $55 with four knockouts, matching the winner, and Jeff Reichwein was fourth for $45 with four of his own. Jason Dailey completed the top five for $30.

The payouts then went deep and strange: nothing for sixth, seventh or ninth, and $5 apiece to Josh Martin in eighth and Juan Lopez in tenth.

The undercard

Rick Mickaliger came sixth and Brig Coupe seventh, both outside the money on a night when eighth and tenth were paid. Jeff Holderman was the first player out after forty-eight minutes.

Josh Martin, who won last month, came eighth. Andrew Shier, who leads the season, came fourteenth.

The bigger picture

Five tournaments, four different winners. Dale has two of them from four appearances — and with only five scores counting, two wins is most of a title. It is how Paul Coffman took the 2015-16 championship from eight starts.

Andrew Shier still leads on 83 points from five starts, four ahead of Rick Mazza. Dale is fourth on 69 having played four.
