Duane Barone Wins $250, the Biggest Prize This League Has Paid

A record that lasted one month. Four players are level in the standings and a fifth is a point ahead of them.

Twenty-two players and a $620 pool — and Duane Barone knocked out six of the twenty-one who had to go, taking $250 in four hours and fifty-five minutes. It is the largest first prize this league has paid, beating the $235 of five weeks ago.

It is Duane’s fourth Canterberry Poker League win, eighteen months after his third — and he is still the man who holds both of the quickest exits this league has recorded.

Shawn Miller was second for $155 with four knockouts, losing the heads-up match in three minutes and twenty-one seconds. It is the first cash of a seven-tournament career and it puts him second in the standings.

Warren Mervin took third and $100, Jason Dailey fourth and $70, and Jeff Reichwein completed the money in fifth for $45 — which is exactly where he finished last month.

Dale Ellicott, the reigning League Champion, bubbled in sixth. Pat Ugarte played his first league tournament and was the first player out, after forty-one minutes — his brother Lee Ugarte, who won the opener, came twelfth.

Andrew Shier and Brig Coupe made two knockouts each and finished seventh and eighth.

The bigger picture

Two tournaments, two different winners, and the table is already a pile-up: Andrew Shier on 43 points, then Shawn Miller, Lee Ugarte and Duane all level on 42.

Andrew leads without having won either tournament — a second and a seventh. It is how he won the title two seasons ago, when four cashes in ten took him to the trophy.
