Mike McEvoy Cashes for the First Time in February and Wins in March

Warren Mervin’s best night in the league, Angela Cain’s second third place in three — and the winner had never been paid here until last month.

Mike McEvoy played eleven Eight Deuce tournaments without ever finishing in the money. He came fourth in the twelfth, four weeks ago. On Friday he won the thirteenth — four knockouts, four hours and forty-six minutes, and $440.

Every player he eliminated finished in the top six. It is his first win here and the third of his career, after two at Canterberry.

Warren Mervin rebought, made the final two and took $305 after fifteen minutes heads-up — comfortably his best result in twenty-one Eight Deuce tournaments, his previous best being the three fourth places he strung together last autumn. He has eleven Canterberry wins to his name and none here.

Angela Cain made four knockouts herself and finished third for $205, the same position she took in January. David Doole was fourth for $150.

Josh Reel bubbled in fifth. Lee Ugarte went ninth, and Lance Cain was the first player out after ninety-one minutes.

The bigger picture

Fourteen players and five rebuys made $1,100, the third-biggest pool the league has assembled and the biggest since March of last year. Only fourteen players sat down; the rebuys did the rest.

Three tournaments, three different winners, and the standings are still a scrum — a point and a half separates Lee Ugarte on 126.50 from Mike McEvoy, who has played one fewer.
