Twenty-Two Players, a Record, and David Doole Takes the Lead

The biggest field this league has ever seated, and seven of them went out to the winner.

Twenty-two players sat down, which is more than this league has ever had — the previous best was twenty, managed five times, most recently last month. David Doole came through it in five hours and fourteen minutes, knocked out seven, and won $120 for his sixth Canterberry Poker League win.

Scott Dishong was second for $75 after a nine-minute heads-up match, a second money finish in a row. Duane Barone took third and $50, his third cash of a season in which he has played every tournament.

Joe Johnson was fourth for $45 with four knockouts, more than anyone but the winner, his fifth cash in twelve league tournaments and one place off the third he took in November. Rick Mazza completed the money in fifth for $40.

The undercard

Brig Coupe bubbled in sixth with a knockout, in the second league tournament he has played. Josh Reel was the first player out after an hour and thirty-two minutes.

Paul Coffman arrived leading the standings and finished twentieth of twenty-two, one of the seven Doole put out. Josh Martin, who won last month, came fourteenth.

The bigger picture

Nine tournaments, seven different winners, and one to play. David Doole and Paul have won two each.

Doole’s win takes him top on 98 points from six starts, eight ahead of Paul, who has played eight and whose card is full — under the five-score rule Paul can only improve now by beating his own worst counting night. Steve McLean is third on 86 and Warren Mervin fourth on 76.
