Juan Lopez Makes Seven Knockouts Count This Time

He made seven and lost in November 2018. On Friday he made seven and won his first.

Fourteen months ago Juan Lopez knocked out seven of twenty-one players in the fifth Canterberry Poker League tournament he had ever entered, and finished second. On Friday he knocked out seven again — and won it, for $245 in four hours and thirty-eight minutes.

It is his first league win, in his eleventh tournament, and it is the second-largest prize this league has paid.

Jason Dailey was second for $160 with four knockouts, losing a twelve-minute heads-up match. It is the best finish of a sixteen-tournament career, and his sixth cash.

Andrew Shier took third and $105 having made five — the three of them accounted for sixteen of the twenty-one eliminations. Josh Martin was fourth for $65 with three, and Lee Ugarte completed the money in fifth for $40.

Mike Conner bubbled in sixth. David Doole was the first player out after fifty-eight minutes, and Eric Denny, who has won the last two tournaments, came sixteenth of twenty-two.

Jeff Reichwein finished eighth, his first night outside the money since September — and it does not cost him the lead.

The bigger picture

Seven tournaments, six different winners. Only Eric Denny has won twice. Juan is the one of the six who had never won a league tournament at all.

Jeff Reichwein leads on 120 points from seven starts, seventeen ahead of Eric. He has cashed five times in seven and has still not won one — and with three tournaments left he is the clearest favorite this season has had.
