Seven Knockouts for Mike Conner, and Josh Martin Wins It

The man who cleared out a third of the field finished second. It is the second time this season, and Warren Mervin was on the wrong end of the first.

Mike Conner knocked out seven of the nineteen players who had to go — more than a third of the field, and more than anybody else in the room. Josh Martin knocked out five and won it: four hours and thirty-four minutes, $155, and a second Canterberry Poker League win nineteen months after his first.

The heads-up match took three minutes and twelve seconds. Mike Conner took $85 for second, five months after winning the hundredth tournament.

Justin Vaughn was third for $60 in the third league tournament he has ever played — he has cashed in all three, spread across three and a half years. Josh Reel took fourth and $45, and David Doole completed the money in fifth for $35 without a knockout.

Steve McLean bubbled in sixth. Shawn Miller finished seventh with two knockouts, taking out the two men who came ninth and tenth — one of whom was Andrew Shier, the League Champion, whose run of three straight cashes ends here.

Eric Denny was the first player out after fifty-four minutes.

The bigger picture

Four tournaments, four different winners — and two of the four, Charlie Drotar and Rick Mazza, were ending long waits of their own.

Andrew Shier still leads on 76 points from four starts, sixteen ahead of Warren Mervin. He has cashed three times in four and has not won one.
